07/09/2026. Prima settimana in Cambogia della missione Settembre 2026 / First week in Cambodia of the mission of September 2026

Here I am, as usual, in the dead of night in front of my computer. It’s already been a week since I arrived in Cambodia, and as always, the days are just flying by, and I’m accumulating a monstrous backlog of work.

The children gave me a deeply moving welcome when I arrived at the Center last Thursday. On my desk at the Center, there is still the small bouquet of flowers they gave me upon my arrival, bringing them to me one by one from the Center’s garden. Even today, when a couple of little girls arrived in the early afternoon, they brought me little floral gifts and a necklace made of woven leaves.

I have never felt the kind of affection I feel here, anywhere else.

These days I am thinking a lot, but the negative feelings I left Italy with are rapidly fading away. The gentleness of these people, who are always ready to give you a smile, is a precious gift.

This morning during my bike ride between Kampot and Kep, I stopped at a roadside stall to get a bottle of cold water. After a refreshing break I set off again, and only when I arrived at the Center did I realize I had left something behind at the stall. I had little doubt that I would find what I had forgotten, but when I arrived, the lady at the stall had not only set my things aside, but had also covered them to protect them from the beating sun.

Today at lunch, I ate with the children who stay to have lunch at our Center. A very simple, frugal meal, but made special by those little eyes expressing all their happiness to have me there with them. I could catch their glances full of joy. And I thought about how much these children have to give in terms of affection and how much they have changed my life. And while I reflected on this, I savored the moment of peace, tranquility, and happiness.

And then the day continued in the afternoon at Kep beach, with 25 of our children, the older ones. As always it was a celebration, and the children unleashed all their irrepressible energy. Our friend Simona, who recently moved to live here in Kampot, was with us, and she was able to experience all their affection just a few minutes after meeting them.

And once we said goodbye to our children, I set off again on my bicycle. Being able to travel the roads at a slightly slower pace than on a motorbike allows you to have a completely different connection with the surrounding area. And once again, the Cambodian Gods kept sending me messages. First a little boy in his dad’s arms, by the side of the road, calling out to greet me as I passed by them, then more children, curious as I went past, waving their little hands and flashing their smiles. How can you not love all of this?

E anche questo è Cambodia or bust. / And this too is Cambodia or bust.
