Dobbiamo purtroppo registrare, dalle notizie inviateci dal nostro Responsabile di Progetto, un focolaio di febbre Dengue nel nostro villaggio di Domnak Chamboak. / We unfortunately have to record, from the news sent to us by our Project Manager, an outbreak of Dengue fever in our village of Domnak Chamboak.
A partire dal mese di aprile ha iniziato a manifestarsi la presenza di casi di febbre Dengue. Il numero delle persone contagiate è via via cresciuto e già alla fine del mese di aprile si erano registrati almeno una trentina di casi. / Beginning in April, cases of dengue fever began to appear. The number of infected people gradually increased, and by the end of April at least 30 cases had already been reported.
E’ anche circolata la notizia della possibile morte di una ragazza, proprio a causa della Dengue. / News also circulated of the possible death of a girl specifically due to Dengue.
Per quanto riguarda i nostri bambini e le loro famiglie sono stati affetti da febbre Dengue uno dei nostri bambini e il papà di una delle nostre bambine. Negli ultimi anni la febbre Dengue è diventata endemica in Cambogia. Nel 2023 un caro amico francese, che tornava in Cambogia dopo averci vissuto per diversi anni, aveva il suo secondo attacco di Dengue e la cosa mi aveva particolarmente colpito. / Dengue fever has become endemic in Cambodia in recent years. Tanto che nel 2024, in vista della partenza per la Cambogia a fine anno, ho deciso di vaccinarmi, cogliendo l’occasione della immissione in commercio del nuovo vaccino. / So much so that in 2024, with a view to leaving for Cambodia at the end of the year, I decided to get vaccinated, taking the opportunity of the release of the new vaccine.
In questo momento, alla luce di quello che sta avvenendo, stiamo consigliando la vaccinazione contro la Dengue ai nostri volontari che vanno in Cambogia, soprattutto se per lunghi periodi. / At this time, in light of what is happening, we are recommending Dengue vaccination to our volunteers who go to Cambodia, especially if for long periods.
Nel frattempo presso il nostro Centro di Domnak Chamboak si è tenuto un workshop, in collaborazione con il Dipartimento della Salute della Provincia di Kep. Lo scorso 9 maggio si è tenuto un incontro con la partecipazione degli esperti del Dipartimento e la presenza di 60 genitori e nonni dei nostri bimbi. / In the meantime, a workshop was held at our Domnak Chamboak Center in collaboration with the Kep Province Department of Health. A meeting was held last May 9 with the participation of experts from the Department and the presence of 60 parents and grandparents of our children.
Durante l’incontro sono stati distribuiti volantini informativi che riportavano le linee guida per la prevenzione della Dengue oltre che materiale quale reti antizanzare e prodotti repellenti anti zanzare. / During the meeting, informational leaflets were distributed that included Dengue prevention guidelines as well as materials such as mosquito nets and mosquito repellent products.
Speriamo che sia sufficiente a limitare i danni. Ma a questo punto forse varrebbe la pena che le autorità iniziassero a prendere in considerazione la vaccinazione. Ci faremo portatori del messaggio, se possibile, con le autorità preposte. Sicuramente questo evento fatto in collaborazione con il Dipartimento della Salute può essere buon viatico per una opportuna collaborazione. / Hopefully, it will be enough to limit the damage. But at this point it might be worthwhile for the authorities to start considering vaccination. We will carry the message, if possible, with the relevant authorities. Certainly this event done in collaboration with the Department of Health can be a good avenue for appropriate collaboration.

Si parte da Malpensa Venerdì 28 Febbraio. Il gruppo questa volta è più numeroso del solito. Include il presidente Franco Farao con i volontari rappresentati da sua moglie Egidia Scapin, da sua figlia Saem Bo, da suo figlio Nhak Farao con la sua ragazza Sara Cretu. / We depart from Malpensa on Friday 28 February. Il 5 Marzo di nuovo giornata a Phnom Penh, con un paio di incontri con imprenditori locali, amici italiani in loco e altri volontari che speriamo di coinvolgere nel nostro progetto. / On 5 March, another day in Phnom Penh, with a couple of meetings with local entrepreneurs, Italian friends on site and other volunteers we hope to involve in our project.
Il 6 Marzo una parte del gruppo (Egidia, Saem, Nhak e Sara) andrà al nord a Siem Reap, per fare un tour dei templi di Angkor, per poi rientrare Domenica 9 Marzo a Phnom Penh. Il Presidente Franco Farao, con il responsabile di progetto Chin Sokkea invece si sposterà a Kampot / Kep per iniziare il lavoro al nostro Centro Diurno di Domnak Chamboak. / On March 6, part of the group (Egidia, Saem, Nhak, and Sara) will go north to Siem Reap to tour the Angkor temples, and then return Sunday, March 9, to Phnom Penh. President Franco Farao, with project manager Chin Sokkea instead will travel to Kampot / Kep to begin work at our Domnak Chamboak Day Care Center.

Torniamo più carichi che mai dopo la missione di novembre 2024 e le festività natalizie. Presto saremo ancora in Cambogia, dal 28 febbraio al 17 marzo prossimi.
Ma nel frattempo abbiamo organizzato, grazie all’amico Francesco e agli amici della Tintoria ILTEP di Fino Mornasco, un incontro di presentazione delle attività della nostra associazione in Cambogia. Sarà una bella occasione per incontrarsi e parlare di Progetto Kep e di Sostegno a Distanza (SAD).
Ci saranno la nostra mostra fotografica e il nostro mercatino solidale, per fare un po’ di raccolta fondi.

Il prossimo Venerdì 15 Novembre parte una nuova avventura. Parte la missione annuale a Domnak Chamboak, presso il nostro Centro Diurno nella provincia di Kep in Cambogia. / Next Friday, November 15, sees the start of a new adventure. The annual mission trip to Domnak Chamboak, at our Day Care Center in Kep province in Cambodia, starts.
Quest’anno non sarà solo il presidente Franco Farao a recarsi a Domnak Chamboak, ma ci saranno anche 2 amici e volontari, Grazia Mazzoleni e suo figlio Seila Longhi, che ritornano in Cambogia per la prima volta dopo l’adozione di Seila nel 2007. / This year it will not only be President Franco Farao who will travel to Domnak Chamboak, but also 2 friends and volunteers, Grazia Mazzoleni and her son Seila Longhi, who are returning to Cambodia for the first time since Seila’s adoption in 2007.
Grazia e Seila faranno le home visits alle case dei bambini con Franco e i ragazzi dello staff e collaboreranno sia nelle attività del Centro che con la realizzazione di un video e foto reportage della missione. / Grazia and Seila will be making home visits to the children’s homes with Franco and the staff members and collaborating both in the Center’s activities and with the production of a video and photo reportage of the mission.
Durante la missione verranno effettuati collegamenti live sul canale Youtube di a Smile for Cambodia Onlus (se riusciamo a raggiungere i 50 iscritti necessari per poter fare le live) o in alternativa su Facebook, come già avvenuto negli scorsi anni. / During the mission, live links will be made on the Youtube channel of a Smile for Cambodia Onlus (if we can reach the required 50 subscribers to be able to do the live feeds) or alternatively on Facebook, as has been done in past years.
E come per gli scorsi anni Franco terrà sul nostro sito il diario di missione, che così tante emozioni ha saputo trasmettere in questi anni dalla Cambogia. Lo scorso 10 ottobre una gradita visita al nostro Centro diurno di Kep. Un team della società Grant Thornton proveniente da Phnom Penh ha fatto visita ai nostri bambini/e e portato graditissimi regali. / Last October 10 a welcome visit to our Kep Day Care Center. A Grant Thornton company team from Phnom Penh visited our children and brought very welcome gifts.

Si svolgerà Domenica 22 Ottobre presso l’Area delle Feste di Via Santa Caterina da Siena a Mariano Comense la 12^ edizione dell’evento Io Disegno per la Cambogia. / The 12th edition of the event Io Disegno per la Cambogia (I Draw for Cambodia) will take place on Sunday, October 22, at the Festival Area on Via Santa Caterina da Siena in Mariano Comense.
Evento animato dai bambini per aiutare i nostri bimbi in Cambogia. Rinnoveremo il nostro piccolo e divertente concorso di disegno, nel quale i bambini che verranno potranno sbizzarrirsi a realizzare i loro piccoli capolavori. Ci saranno premi per tutti e premi speciali per i migliori disegni votati dagli stessi bambini. / Children-led event to help our children in Cambodia. We will renew our fun little drawing contest, in which the children who come can indulge in making their own little masterpieces. There will be prizes for everyone and special prizes for the best drawings voted by the children themselves.
L’evento sarà anche l’occasione per l’estrazione della nostra lotteria annuale di beneficenza per la raccolta fondi per il nostro Centro Diurno di Domnak Chamboak nella provincia di Kep in Cambogia, con il quale sosteniamo circa 200 bambini/e e ragazzi/e dell’area rurale circostante. Ci sarà la nostra mostra fotografica e il nostro mercatino solidale di oggettistica cambogiana. / The event will also be an opportunity for the drawing of our annual charity raffle to raise funds for our Domnak Chamboak Day Care Center in Kep Province, Cambodia, through which we support about 200 children/youth in the surrounding rural area. There will be our photo exhibition and our solidarity market of Cambodian items.

Abbiamo ricevuto informazione e immagini dell’alluvione in corso sul territorio del nostro villaggio a Domnak Chamboak a causa delle intense piogge monsoniche degli ultimi giorni. / We have received information and pictures of the ongoing flooding on the territory of our village in Domnak Chamboak due to the intense monsoon rains of the past few days.
Grazie a Dio non ci sono vittime, ma tutta l’area più bassa del villaggio è stata allagata. / Thank God there are no casualties, but the entire lower area of the village was flooded.
Il nostro Centro ha subito danni al tetto dell’edificio nuovo e il nostro team in Cambogia sta lavorando per quantificare il danno subito. Essendo nella parte un po’ più alta del villaggio si è per il momento salvato dall’alluvione. / Our Center has sustained damage to the roof of the new building, and our team in Cambodia is working to quantify the damage sustained. Being in the somewhat higher part of the village, it has been saved from the flooding for the time being.
I canali agricoli sono letteralmente in piena e una delle situazioni più critiche si è verificata nella vallata alle spalle del nostro villaggio dove si trova il Secret Lake, un bacino artificiale costruito ai tempi dei Khmer Rossi, che oltre ad esondare ha rischiato di sfondare la diga che lo chiude. Le autorità hanno dovuto aprire le chiuse per evitare il rischio di crollo che avrebbe avuto effetti ancor più devastanti su tutta la vallata. / The agricultural canals are literally flooding, and one of the most critical situations occurred in the valley behind our village where Secret Lake, a reservoir built in Khmer Rouge times, is located, which in addition to overflowing threatened to break through the dam that closes it. Authorities had to open the sluices to avoid the risk of collapse, which would have had even more devastating effects on the entire valley.

E così si parte per un nuovo anno che tutti ci auguriamo diverso dai due anni appena trascorsi. / And so it is off to a new year that we all hope will be different from the two years that have just passed.
Il 2022 speriamo davvero che sia l’anno della ripartenza. Della ripartenza delle nostre attività sul territorio e sul campo. Della ripartenza delle nostre missioni in Cambogia. Per queste ultime siamo già in parecchi in fila per partire appena possibile. / We really hope that 2022 will be the year of the restart. The restart of our activities on the ground and in the field. Il presidente Franco Farao sta pianificando una missione, dopo ben 3 anni di assenza, per il prossimo mese di marzo, molto probabilmente con il nostro amico Silvio Zagli. Gli amici Stefania Bertarini e Daniele Romano stanno pianificando anche loro una missione e al nostro Centro di Kep li aspettano con ansia e già hanno preparato vari lavori per loro. La nostra Jane Hartley deciderà alla fine di febbraio se e quando andare per la sua ennesima missione della durata di circa due mesi per l’insegnamento della lingua inglese ai nostri bambini. E altri probabilmente arriveranno in corso d’anno se davvero la situazione si normalizzerà. / President Franco Farao is planning a mission, after 3 years of absence, for next March, most probably with our friend Silvio Zagli. Our friends Stefania Bertarini and Daniele Romano are also planning a mission and at our Center in Kep they are anxiously waiting for them and have already prepared various jobs for them. Si avvicina la conclusione dei lavori di ristrutturazione del vecchio edificio del nostro Centro Diurno di Domnak Chamboak. / The completion of renovations to the old building of our Domnak Chamboak Day Care Center is approaching.
I lavori sono stati avviati nello scorso mese di novembre, all’avvio della stagione secca in Cambogia, e dovrebbero essere terminati nella prima parte di gennaio. / Work began last November, at the start of the dry season in Cambodia, and is expected to be completed in the first part of January.
I lavori, partiti per la sostituzione del tetto dell’edificio, sono diventati strada facendo una vera e propria profonda ristrutturazione dell’edificio (acquistato nel 2014 unitamente al primo lotto di terreno). / The work, which started just as replacement of the roof of the building, has actually become a real deep renovation of the building (purchased in 2014 along with the first plot of land).
Oltre al tetto si è provveduto a eliminare una colonna interna collocata proprio nel mezzo del locale centrale dell’edificio, a rimuovere i resti della cucina nel retro dell’edificio, ad aprire nuovi varchi per l’accesso posteriore dell’edificio e a completare la chiusura delle pareti nella parte superiore del soffitto alla congiunzione con il tetto. / In addition to the roof, an interior column located right in the middle of the central room of the building was removed, the remains of the kitchen in the back of the building were removed, new openings for the rear access of the building were opened, and the closure of the walls at the top of the ceiling at the junction with the roof was completed.
Il programma di investimenti per il 2022 è in fase di definizione in questi giorni e presto avremo la lista dei lavori aggiuntivi più urgenti da effettuare. La manutenzione di immobili nelle zone rurali delle aree tropicali e subtropicali è estremamente impegnativa, come abbiamo imparato sulla nostra pelle in questi anni. / The investment program for 2022 is being finalized these days and soon we will have the list of the most urgent additional works to be carried out.
