Oggi giornata di riposo assoluto e per sfruttare il tempo a disposizione per continuare la mia perenne e quotidiana rincorsa a recuperare gli arretrati che ho sulle varie attività. / Today is a day of absolute rest and to use the time to continue my perennial and daily chase to catch up on the backlog I have on various activities.

La colazione all’Anik Palace è sempre speciale, ancora di più adesso che hanno riportato la sala colazioni al tredicesimo piano, dal quale si gode di un’ottima vista sulla città. I grattacieli continuano a spuntare come funghi e ce ne sono in costruzione a perdita d’occhio. Mi piacerebbe fare un paragone tra le foto fatte a marzo 2022 e quelle fatte adesso per vedere quanto si nota la differenza. / Breakfast at the Anik Palace is always special, even more so now that they have moved the breakfast room back to the 13th floor, from which there is a great view of the city. Skyscrapers keep popping up like mushrooms and there are ones under construction as far as the eye can see. I would like to make a comparison between photos taken in March 2022 and those taken now to see how noticeable the difference is.

Verso metà giornata esco a fare due passi fino al più vicino Lucky Market, una catena di supermercati diffusa in tutta Phnom Penh, per fare un po’ di spesa e mangiare un boccone. Oggi non ho voglia di mangiare al ristorante. / Toward the middle of the day I go out for a walk to the nearest Lucky Market, a chain of supermarkets spread throughout Phnom Penh, to do some shopping and grab a bite to eat. I have no desire to eat at a restaurant today.

Giro per il supermercato alla ricerca di qualcosa che non sia da cucinare, non disponendo di spazio per cucinare nella mia stanza di albergo. / I walk around the supermarket looking for something that is not to be cooked, having no space to cook in my hotel room.

Alla fine opto per dei crackers, una baguette e delle sottilette. Menù direi molto basico. / In the end I opt for crackers, a baguette, and some cheese slices. Menu I would say very basic.

Rientro in hotel e mi prendo qualche minuto per mangiare il mio pranzo. A dire la verità mi ricordo in quel momento che la sera prima avevo portato a casa una parte della pizza che non ero riuscito a mangiare al ristorante e alla fine faccio pranzo con quella. / I return to the hotel and take a few minutes to eat my lunch. Actually I remember at that moment that the night before I had brought home some of the pizza that I had not been able to eat at the restaurant and I end up having lunch with that.

Verso le 15 squilla il telefono. E’ la centrale operativa dell’assicurazione. Vogliono verificare come sto e mi fanno parlare con il medico. Mi confermano anche i contatti dell’autista del taxi che domani mi accompagnerà in aeroporto e il fatto che avrò l’assistenza negli aeroporti di Phnom Penh, Hong Kong e Malpensa, con trasporto in sedia a rotelle, oltre ad una ambulanza che mia spetterà a Malpensa per il trasporto fino a casa. Ci risentiremo ancora prima della partenza. / Around 3 p.m. the phone rings. It’s the insurance company’s operations center. They want to check on me and have me speak to the doctor. They also confirm the contact details of the cab driver who will take me to the airport tomorrow and the fact that I will have assistance at the airports in Phnom Penh, Hong Kong, and Malpensa, with wheelchair transport, as well as an ambulance that will be my responsibility at Malpensa to transport me home. We will be in touch again before departure.

Riprendo a lavorare. Ogni tanto mi arriva qualche messaggio che mi chiede come sto. / I get back to work. Every now and then I get a few messages asking how I am doing.

Più tardi Sokkea mi chiama e mi lancia un gradito invito ad andare a mangiare a casa di suo fratello con Olivier. Mi fa piacere passare qualche oretta in buona compagnia. / Later Sokkea calls me and issues a welcome invitation to go eat at her brother’s house with Olivier. I am glad to spend a few hours in good company.

Alle 19 circa Sokkea e Olivier passano a prendermi in auto. La casa del fratello di Sokkea non è molto lontana dall’Anik Palace. Più o meno a metà strada tra l’Anik Palace e il Russian Market. / At about 7 p.m. Sokkea and Olivier pick me up in their car. Sokkea’s brother’s house is not very far from the Anik Palace. More or less halfway between the Anik Palace and the Russian Market.

E’ un ritrovo familiare con la famiglia del fratello di Sokkea, Sokkea e i suoi due bambini, Lita e Mr. Bee, Olivier e io. / It’s a family get-together with Sokkea’s brother Sokkea’s family and his two children, Lita and Mr. Bee, Olivier and me.

Cena a base di gamberi, calamari, ostriche e verdure. Da cucinare al momento su una apposita griglia, che ha anche un contenitore intorno, che serve per cuocere le verdure in un gustoso brodo. Olivier va di ostriche e le offre anche a me, ma devo dire che non sono esattamente il mio cibo preferito. Preferisco decisamente le verdure nel brodo e i gamberi. / Dinner of shrimp, squid, oysters and vegetables. To be cooked freshly on a special grill, which also has a container around it to cook the vegetables in a tasty broth. Olivier goes for oysters and offers them to me as well, but I have to say they are not exactly my favorite food. I definitely prefer vegetables in the broth and shrimp.

Alla fine mi preparano l’ostrica con un accompagnamento di verdure e di un mix di peperoncino, non troppo piccante e mi lascio convincere ad assaggiarla; non male fatta così, non si percepisce il feeling viscido dell’ostrica e non si sente il forte “sapore di mare” che la caratterizza. Di certo una soluzione non per puristi dell’ostrica, ma a me pare una buona soluzione per riuscire a mangiarla e anche con un certo gusto. / Eventually they prepare the oyster for me with an accompaniment of vegetables and a chili mix, not too spicy, and I let myself be persuaded to taste it; not bad done this way, you don’t get the slimy feeling of the oyster and you don’t feel the strong “sea flavor” that characterizes it. Certainly a solution not for oyster purists, but to me it seems a good solution to be able to eat it and with some taste, too.

La serata scorre veloce e salutati i padroni di casa e fatti i complimenti alla cuoca, prendiamo la via del mio hotel. E’ l’occasione per salutare Olivier e i bimbi di Sokkea. Domani non li vedrò. / The evening passes quickly and after having said goodbye to the hosts and complimented the cook, we make our way to my hotel. This is also the opportunity to say goodbye to Olivier and the children of Sokkea. I will not see them tomorrow.

Dopo il rientro in hotel ancora un po’ di lavoro e scarico le foto che mi ha mandato Sokkea. Ora di andare a dormire. E’ stata una bella giornata di riposo fisico, ma il sonno e la stanchezza non mancano. E costole e lividi si fanno sentire. Ogni volta che osservo scopro qualche nuovo livido. La gamba sinistra è ancora gonfia e fa male. / After returning to the hotel some more work and downloading the photos that Sokkea sent me. Time to go to bed. It was a good day of physical rest, but sleepiness and fatigue are not lacking. And my ribs and bruises are making me feel them. Every time I look I discover a few new bruises. The left leg is still swollen and aching.
