Prima tappa completata, siamo arrivati a Singapore. / First leg completed, we arrived in Singapore.

Al nostro gruppo si è aggiunta una compagna di viaggio, Theary cambogiana che vive a Villaguardia in provincia di Como. / Our group was joined by a fellow traveler, Cambodian lady Theary who lives in Villaguardia in the province of Como.

12 ore di volo sono passate in fretta. Io qualche ora sono riuscito a dormire. Anche Grazia e Seila bene o male sono riusciti a riposare, quindi questo pomeriggio dovremmo essere in grado di andare al mercato di Tuol Tompung (meglio conosciuto come Russian Market) a dare un’occhiata. / Twelve hours of flight went by quickly. I managed to sleepa few hours. Grazia and Seila also managed to rest, so this afternoon we should be able to go to Tuol Tompung Market (better known as Russian Market) to have a look.

Pausa di circa 4 ore a Singapore e poi si riparte per Phnom Penh, dove arriviamo nel primo pomeriggio. Durante il volo sorvoliamo tutta la costa della Cambogia dal confine del Vietnam, fino a Sihanoukville, passando sopra delle isole che dovrebbero essere l’arcipelago di Koh Rong e Koh Rong Saloem. Atterriamo a Pochentong, l’aeroporto di Phnom Penh da sud, volando sopra la zona dove si trova l’orfanotrofio di HappyLand che ha ospitato la nostra Saem dal 2010 fino al 2015./ Layover of about 4 hours in Singapore and then it’s off to Phnom Penh, where we arrive in the early afternoon. During the flight, we fly over the entire coast of Cambodia from the Vietnam border to Sihanoukville, passing over islands that are supposed to be the archipelago of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Saloem. We land in Pochentong, Phnom Penh’s airport from the south, flying over the area where the HappyLand orphanage that housed our Saem from 2010 until 2015 is located.

Un po’ di trambusto con le procedure per il visto di Seila e Grazia e soprattutto per la novità del modulo doganale elettronico appena introdotto a partire da inizio 2024. / Some hustle and bustle with Seila and Grace’s visa procedures and especially with the newly introduced electronic customs form from early 2024.

Ci ritroviamo a dover convincere le guardie doganali del fatto che Seila è nato in Cambogia. Ci chiedono il certificato di nascita, che ovviamente Grazia non ha, dato che sia sul passaporto che sulla carta di identità italiana di Seila c’è chiaramente scritto che lui è nato a Phnom Penh. Dopo un poi di rimbalzi dal bancone dei visti a quello dei tablet per la compilazione degli e-arrival form e dopo un po’ di discussione con la ragazza in divisa che ci sta tenendo bloccati, riusciamo a fare venire alla guardia il fondato dubbio che Seila sia nato in Cambogia e viene quindi coinvolto il diretto superiore. Ma il colpo vincente arriva quando Grazia apre per caso il portafoglio e appare una foto di Seila quando era piccolino, che desta subito l’attenzione delle due ragazze al di là del bancone. Il loro responsabile esamina i documenti e sembra sulla via del convincersi della Cambogianità di Seila. / We find ourselves having to convince the customs guards that Seila was born in Cambodia. They ask us for his birth certificate, which of course Grazia does not have, since both Seila’s passport and Italian ID card clearly state that he was born in Phnom Penh. After being bounced a few times from the visa counter to the tablet counter for filling out e-arrival forms, and after a bit of discussion with the uniformed girl who is keeping us stuck, we manage to make the guard entertain a well-founded doubt that Seila was born in Cambodia, and the immediate supervisor is then involved. But the winning shot comes when Grazia accidentally opens her wallet and a photo of Seila when he was a baby appears, which immediately arouses the attention of the two girls across the counter. Their manager examines the documents and seems on his way to convincing himself of Seila’s Cambodian-ness.

Nel frattempo le altre 8-10 guardie di confine sono indaffarate chi con il cellulare chi con il computer, probabilmente a visionare e monitorare la versione cambogiana di Dagospia e in fondo alla fila c’è una ragazza in divisa che se la dorme della grossa, senza minimamente farsi scrupolo dei colleghi o dei suoi responsabili. / Meanwhile, the other 8 to 10 border guards are busy some with their cell phones and some with their computers, probably viewing and monitoring the Cambodian version of Dagospia, and at the back of the line is a girl in uniform who is sleeping it off without the slightest qualm about her colleagues or her boss.

Intanto il passaporto di Seila è passato di grado, dalla guardia di confine, al tenente di turno e dalle sue mani al boss che si presume sia chiuso nell’ufficio in fondo a sinistra del bancone. Alla fine il tenente (o maggiore o colonnello, non saprei) riappare sorridente e ci conferma: è stato riconosciuto che Seila è nato in Cambogia e quindi non siamo i soliti italiani che fanno i furbi per non pagare il visto! Anzi molto cortesemente il comandante ci indica di mostrare il bollino apposto sul passaporto di Seila ovunque andiamo e ovunque ci sia un biglietto di ingresso da pagare, perchè l’esenzione ricoosciuta per il visto è riconosciuta anche per tutti i biglietti di ingresso ai musei e ai templi. / In the meantime, Seila’s passport has passed through the ranks, from the border guard, to the lieutenant on duty and from his hands to the boss who is presumably locked in the office at the far left of the counter. Eventually the lieutenant (or major or colonel, I don’t know) reappears smiling and confirms to us: it has been acknowledged that Seila was born in Cambodia and therefore we are not the usual Italians who are to be smart to avoid paying the visa! Indeed very politely the commander indicates to us to show the stamp affixed to Seila’s passport wherever we go and wherever there is an entrance fee to pay, because the recognized visa exemption is also recognized for all museum and temple entrance fees.

Recuperiamo le nostre valigie, che da circa 45 minuti stanno girando sul nastro trasportatore dove sono state scaricate dall’aereo e quando finalmente ci avviciniamo al controllo doganale, siamo proprio gli ultimi e non c’è più nessuno a controllare. Tutto il nostro lavoro per capire e compilare il modulo del e-arrival buttato via. Pazienza. / We retrieve our suitcases, which have been spinning on the conveyor belt where they were unloaded from the plane for about 45 minutes, and when we finally approach the customs checkpoint, we are just the last ones and there is no one left to check them. All our work to understand and fill out the e-arrival form thrown away. Patience.

Sokkea già da tempo ci sta aspettando all’esterno dell’aeroporto insieme ai suoi bimbi, Mr. Bee e Li Ta. Grande abbraccio, è sempre un piacere rivederli. Prima cosa da fare, le simcard cambogiane per i nostri telefoni e poi finalmente via verso l’hotel. / Sokkea has already been waiting for us for some time outside the airport with her children, Mr. Bee and Li Ta. Big hug, always a pleasure to see them again. First thing to do, Cambodian simcards for our phones and then finally off to the hotel.

Poi stasera a cena con Martina Cannetta al ristorante Ne Sat proprio vicino al Russian Market. Sarà bello ritrovare Martina dopo due anni. Lo scorso anno quando ero venuto in Cambogia per la mia missione 2023 lei era appena rientrata in Italia. Questa volta è in partenza a fine mese e quindi riusciamo a vederci. / Then dinner tonight with Martina Cannetta at Ne Sat restaurant right next to Russian Market. It will be nice to meet Martina again after two years. Last year when I came to Cambodia for my 2023 mission she had just returned to Italy. This time she is leaving at the end of the month so we are able to see each other.

Con Martina avevamo in animo di avviare un progetto di collaborazione per inserire nella sua scuola orafa i nostri ragazzi che non vogliono proseguire per l’università (in questi primi quattro anni di diplomati dalla high school, una piccola minoranza). Ne parleremo di nuovo con lei e Sokkea. / With Martina we were planning to start a collaborative project to include in her goldsmith school our kids who do not want to go on for college (in these first four years of graduates from high school, a small minority). We will discuss this again with her and Sokkea.

Parte 2 / Part 2

E siamo al termine della prima giornata in Cambogia. Phnom Penh caotica come sempre, stasera ancor di più per la conclusione dell’ultima giornata del Water Festival. / And we are at the end of the first day in Cambodia. Phnom Penh chaotic as always, tonight even more so for the conclusion of the last day of the Water Festival.

E’ stata una giornata lunghissima, con poche ore di sonno, che adesso dobbiamo recuperare. / It was a very long day, with only a few hours of sleep, which we now have to catch up on.

Al nostro arrivo a Phnom Penh abbiamo trovato tempo buono, parzialmente nuvoloso, ma con temperatura di circa 32-33°. / Upon arrival in Phnom Penh we found good weather, partly cloudy, but with a temperature of about 32-33°.

All’arrivo in hotel, una doccia al volo e poi via di corsa al Russian Market, a dare un’occhiata e a iniziare a fare qualche acquisto per la nostra lotteria di beneficenza del prossimo anno. / Upon arrival at the hotel, a quick shower and then off to the Russian Market to take a look and start making some purchases for our charity raffle next year.

Ormai abbiamo i nostri punti di riferimento all’interno del grande mercato, in cui si trova un po’ di tutto, e che è particolarmente conosciuto dai turisti stranieri che passano a Phnom Penh. / By now we have our landmarks inside the large market, where you can find a little bit of everything, and which is particularly well-known to foreign tourists passing through Phnom Penh.

Alle 18.30 siamo già seduti al ristorante Ne Sat e ci troviamo con Martina Cannetta, che ce lo ha fatto scoprire due anni fa. Una cena davvero gradevole in ottima compagnia. E lo chef anche oggi non si smentisce e riesce ancora una volta a sorprenderci per la bontà del cibo che mette in tavola (specialità di pesce). / By 6:30 p.m. we are already seated at the Ne Sat restaurant and meet Martina Cannetta, who introduced us to it two years ago. A very pleasant dinner in good company. And the chef again today does not disappoint and once again manages to surprise us with the goodness of the food he puts on the table (fish specialties).

Verso la fine della cena la stanchezza prende il sopravvento e poco dopo le 20 ci salutiamo e noi ci mettiamo alla ricerca di un Pass App. Con il Water Festival sono tutti impegnati e ci vuole un po’ più del solito prima di trovarne uno disponibile. / Towards the end of dinner, tiredness takes over and shortly after 8 p.m. we say goodbye and we set off in search of PassApp tuk tuk. With the Water Festival everyone is busy and it takes a little longer than usual before we find one available.

Arrivo in hotel, veloci saluti e appuntamento a domani mattina per colazione, prima, e per un giro della città in tuk tuk, dopo. / We arrive at the hotel, quick goodbyes and appointment for tomorrow morning for breakfast first and a tuk tuk tour of the city later.

Ormai gli occhi faticano davvero a stare aperti. Ora davvero di spegnere tutto e infilarsi a letto. / By now the eyes are really struggling to stay open. Time really to turn everything off and slip into bed.

E anche questo, come sempre, è Cambodia or bust. / And that too, as always, is Cambodia or bust.
