La mattina presto prendiamo il nostro tuk tuk, con cui avevamo concordato ieri sera di trovarci sotto l’hotel, verso i Killing Fields di Chang Oeuk, a circa 15 chilometri dal centro città. / Early in the morning we take our tuk tuk, with whom we had arranged last night to meet under the hotel, to the Killing Fields of Chang Oeuk, about 15 kilometers from the city center.

Attorno al mausoleo, che io avevo visto nel 2007, è stato costruito un grande recinto che racchiude tutta l’area delle fosse comuni, dove i Khmer Rossi portavano a morire i prigionieri di Tuol Sleng, o S21, la prigione luogo di indicibili torture in cui furono detenute circa 15.000 persone e delle quali solo 7 sopravvissero al genocidio. / Around the mausoleum, which I had seen in 2007, a large enclosure has been built that encloses the entire area of the mass graves, where the Khmer Rouge took the prisoners of Tuol Sleng, or S21, the prison site of unspeakable torture in which some 15,000 people were held and of whom only seven survived the genocide.

Prigione diretta da Kaing Guek Eav meglio conosciuto come Duch, primo e per lungo tempo unico Khmer Rosso condannato (nel 2010), dalle Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia conosciute anche informalmente come il Tribunale dei Khmer Rossi, Tribunale istituito anni e anni fa su pressioni delle istituzioni internazionali, ma che ha tanto faticato a giungere ad un verdetto definitivo sul destino dei più vicini collaboratori di Pol Pot (Fratello n. 1), il folle e sanguinario dittatore e guida dei Khmer Rossi, arrestati nel 2007 e internati nella prigione speciale (da fuori sembrava un albergo di lusso) delle Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. Nuon Chea (Fratello n. 2 del regime), Ieng Sary (Fratello n. 3 e cognato di Pol Pot) ex Vice Primo Ministro nonchè Ministro degli Esteri del regime e Ieng Tirith sua moglie ed ex ministro della Cultura del regime sono morti prima che si potesse arrivare ad un verdetto nel loro processo. Khieu Sampan (classe 1931, nato nella provincia di Svay Rieng), ex Capo di Stato è stato condannato nel 2022 per le accuse di genocidio, crimini contro l’Umanità e gravi violazioni della Convenzione di Ginevra e trasferito nel febbraio del 2023 dalla prigione speciale presso le Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia nella prigione statale della provincia di Kandal. / Prison headed by Kaing Guek Eav better known as Duch, the first and for a long time the only Khmer Rouge convicted (in 2010), by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia also known informally as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, a tribunal established years and years ago under pressure from international institutions, but which has struggled so hard to come to a final verdict on the fate of the closest associates of Pol Pot (Brother No. 1), the mad and bloodthirsty dictator and leader of the Khmer Rouge, who were arrested in 2007 and interned in the special prison (from the outside it looked like a luxury hotel) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. Entrare a Chang Oeuk è un’esperienza forte. Difficile trattenere le lacrime. Persone uccise con un colpo di zappa sulla testa o sul collo (usare un proiettile era considerato uno spreco per questi esseri umani ormai ridotti a fantasmi dalle torture subite), bambini ai quali veniva fracassato il cranio sbattendoli contro l’albero della morte, mentre musica e rumori di vario tipo venivano diffusi dagli altoparlanti del campo per coprire le ultime grida delle vittime. Fa rabbrividire la crudeltà di quanto successo. Fa rabbrividire il contenuto del mausoleo al centro del campo, dove sono conservato i teschi e le ossa prelevati dalle fosse comuni lì intorno dove i condannati a morte venivano abbandonati. / People killed with a hoe blow on the head or neck (using a bullet was considered a waste for these human beings now reduced to ghosts by their torture), children whose skulls were smashed in by slamming them against the tree of death, while music and noises of various kinds were broadcast from the camp’s loudspeakers to cover the last screams of the victims. Grande rispetto e tanta tristezza, e l’augurio che fenomeni folli come questi non debbano più ripetersi, anche se in realtà quello che viene proiettato dai notiziari ogni giorno sulle guerre in corso lascia poche speranze sul fatto che la bestia uomo, possa finalmente raggiungere la pace con se stesso e smetter di sprecare vite in guerre inutili e disastrose. / Great respect and much sadness, and a wish that insane phenomena such as these need never happen again, although in reality what is projected by the news every day about the ongoing wars leaves little hope that the beast called man, can finally achieve peace with himself and stop wasting lives in unnecessary and disastrous wars.

Carichi del nostro piccolo fardello ci avviamo a fine mattinata di nuovo verso il centro di Phnom Pen, dove ci aspetta un appuntamento più leggero. Siamo a pranzo con gli amici Sokkea, Igino e Vannika. Vannika si è appena aggiunta al nostro gruppo. Si occupa di real estate. Nata in provincia di Kompong Soam (Sihanoukville) e rimasta orfana molto presto, ha saputo con caparbietà farsi largo nella vita ed arrivare alla sua attuale occupazione. Tanto rispetto per questi ragazzi cambogiani. E’ un piacere averla alla nostra tavola. / Laden with our small burden, we set off late in the morning back to downtown Phnom Pen, where a lighter appointment awaits us. We are having lunch with friends Sokkea, Igino and Vannika. Vannika has just joined our group. She is in the real estate business. Born in Kompong Soam province (Sihanoukville) and orphaned at a very early age, she has stubbornly managed to make her way through life and arrive at her current occupation. So much respect for these Cambodian children. It is a pleasure to have her at our table.

Nel pomeriggio Grazia e Seila proseguono con shopping selvaggio. Andare anche a visitare Tuol Sleng, il museo del genocidio, la prigione dalla quale arrivavano le persone che poi furono uccise a Chang Oeuk, forse è un po’ troppo in un giorno solo. Meglio concentrarsi su qualcosa di più leggero. / In the afternoon Grazia and Seila continue with wild shopping. Ggoing to visit also Tuol Sleng, the genocide museum, the prison from which the people who were later killed in Chang Oeuk came, is perhaps a bit too much in one day. Better to focus on something lighter.

Io ho un ritrovo con amici occidentali che vivono da tempo a Phnom Penh e facciamo tardi raccontandoci un po’ di quello che è successo in questi anni, soprattutto con il nostro progetto a Kep. La sera si fa notte ben presto e le chiacchiere ci portano ben oltre la mezzanotte. / I have a get-together with Western friends who have been living in Phnom Penh for some time and we stay up late telling each other a bit about what has happened over the years, especially with our project in Kep. The evening soon turns to night and the chatter takes us well past midnight.

Quando rientro all’Anik Palace Hotel le strade di Phnom Penh sono finalmente quiete. Ora di andare a dormire. Domani si parte presto per Kampot. / When I return to the Anik Palace Hotel the streets of Phnom Penh are finally quiet. Time to go to bed. Tomorrow we leave early for Kampot.
