For a long stretch out of town we take a different road than usual and only after a while do I recognize the usual highway.

Arriviamo a Kampot verso le 12.30 e ci sistemiamo in hotel prima di andare a mangiare un boccone. / We arrive in Kampot around 12:30 and settle into the hotel before going for a bite to eat.

Quando arriviamo i bimbi sono già tutti in fila ai lati della stradina di accesso al Centro. Mentre passiamo le loro manine si protendono per salutarci. Tutti vogliono toccare le nostre mani. E quando scendiamo dal tuk tuk è una sarabanda di manine contro le nostre mani, di abbracci. E dopo pochi attimi arriva lei, la mia piccola Sreymean, che mi abbraccia e vuole venire in braccio. Il suo abbraccio è dolce e commovente. Arriva anche la stupenda Kunthea con i suoi occhioni neri e anche lei mi abbraccio. Potevo forse chiedere una accoglienza migliore? Qualcuno dietro di me ha già gli occhi lucidi e ne ha ben donde. / When we arrive the children are already all lined up on either side of the narrow access road to the Center. As we pass their little hands reach out to greet us. They all want to touch our hands. And when we get off the tuk tuk it is a saraband of little hands against our hands, of hugs. And after a few moments here comes, my little Sreymean, hugging me and wanting to come in my arms. Her hug is sweet and touching. The gorgeous Kunthea with her big black eyes also arrives, and she too hugs me. Could I have asked for a better welcome?Someone behind me is already bright-eyed and has good reason to be.

Ci sono tanti piccolini, alcuni conosciuti, altri nuovi arrivati quest’anno. La piccola Kunthea, la nostra mascotte, prende anche lei la sua dose di abbracci e baci. / There are many little ones, some known, some newcomers this year. Little Kunthea, our mascot, also gets her share of hugs and kisses.

E’ tutto già pronto per lo spettacolo di danza tradizionale organizzato per il mio arrivo e quello di Grazia e Seila. Siamo tutti e tre molto emozionati. / Everything is ready for the traditional dance performance organized for my arrival and that of Grace and Seila. All three of us are very excited.

Vedere una volta ancora questi piccoli che ci dimostrano così tanto affetto è davvero commovente. Vedere ancora una volta le danze ritmate della tradizione Khmer, mi fa pensare a quanto questi bambini mi danno in termini di affetto, di felicità nel vederli crescere di anno in anno e vederli sempre più stupendi con i loro occhietti neri e curiosi. / To see once again these little ones showing us so much affection is really touching. Seeing once again the rhythmic dances of the Khmer tradition, makes me think of how much these children give me in terms of affection, happiness in seeing them grow year by year and seeing them more and more gorgeous with their little black and curious eyes.

Ci sono Channa, Theara, Titlika, Niang e la nuova assunta Kimhien. Theara e Kimhien saranno le nostre guide nelle home visits previste per il pomeriggio. / There are Channa, Theara, Titlika, Niang and new recruit Kimhien. Il nostro corpo di ballo ha lavorato sodo e in due gruppi si esibisce in cinque diverse danze, tra cui la mia preferita, quella proveniente dalla provincia di Svay Rieng, che ho nel cuore in quanto provincia natale dei nostri due figli, fatta con i bambini e le bambine che ritmano la danza battendo i gusci di cocco. / Our dance team worked hard and in two groups perform five different dances, including my favorite, the one from Svay Rieng province, which I hold in my heart as the home province of our two children, done with little boys and girls who rhythm the dance by beating coconut shells.

Grazia e Seila sono sorpresi, emozionati ed estasiati. Penso che non potesse esserci partenza migliore per la loro permanenza al Centro. Seila al momento si esprime poco, assorbe negli occhi tutto quello che gli si presenta della Cambogia. Sta probabilmente ancora elaborando questo ritorno nel suo Paese Natale, ma non ho alcun dubbio che stare con questi meravigliosi bambini tirerà fuori da lui la migliore delle reazioni. / Grazia and Seila are surprised, excited and ecstatic. I think there could not have been a better start to their stay at the Center.Seila expresses little at the moment, absorbing in his eyes all that is presented to him about Cambodia. He is probably still processing this return to his native country, but I have no doubt that being with these wonderful children will bring out the best reaction from him.

Terminato lo spettacolo di danza è già ora di passare alle attività della missione con le prime home visits. / With the dance performance over, it is already time to move on to mission activities with the first home visits.

Home visits prima di tutto dedicate alle visite alle famiglie che hanno avuto la casa distrutta dal tornado del 6/7 maggio scorso. Prima a casa di Soth Sok, la bimba entrata nel nostro programma SAD proprio a seguito di quello che era successo. La casa è ben in mezzo alle risaie, dall’altro lato del villaggio, oltre la statale Kep-Kampot. Il sorriso di Sok ci rende tutta la gratitudine sua e della famiglia per l’aiuto che abbiamo cercato di dare. La casa è stata ricostruita, mi viene detto, con il supporto di un altro organizzazione no profit che opera sul territorio. / Home visits first dedicated to visiting families who had their homes destroyed by the May 6/7 tornado. First to the home of Soth Sok, the child who entered our SAD program just as a result of what had happened. The house is well in the middle of the rice fields, on the other side of the village, across the Kep-Kampot highway. Sok’s smile renders us all her and the family’s gratitude for the help we tried to give.The house was rebuilt, I am told, with the support of another nonprofit organization working in the area.

E poi di nuovo in movimento in tuk tuk per un pezzo e a piedi per un altro pezzo per andare a vedere la casa di Sreyfong. C’è con lei il papà, che lavora come muratore e che è anche venuto a fare diversi lavori presso il nostro Centro. La mamma ha trovato lavoro in una fabbrica di articoli sportivi di un famoso brand internazionale. Sreyfong non sorride tanto. Il papà ci spiega che in questi giorni ha avuto febbre alta e mal di gola e ha anche dovuto fare delle iniezioni prescritte dai medici dell’ospedale di strada che sta sulla statale Kep-Kampot proprio all’altezza di dove io mi sono schiantato in moto lo scorso anno. / And then again on the move by tuk tuk for at first and then on foot to go see Sreyfong’s house.
